Make Gwinnett Great Again

Why Vote Black

Taxation without representation describes a populace that is required to pay taxes to a government authority without having any say in that government’s policies.

Michael Thurmond

Governor

Mike Thurmond believes in Georgia’s promise. His life embodies Georgia’s greatness and promise of possibility. His vision and leadership are what our state needs to meet this moment.

Mike grew up in rural Clarke County, the youngest of nine children. While his parents hoped he’d become a preacher, Mike heard a different calling, a call to service. So he dedicated his life to helping others rise out of poverty, improving our schools and making Georgia a safer and more affordable place to raise a family.

Mike was the youngest of nine children and graduated from Clarke Central High School in Athens. He graduated from Paine College in Augusta then earned a law degree from the South Carolina School of Law before returning home to Clarke County to establish a law practice.

At 33, Mike was elected to the Georgia Legislature, defeating a long-term incumbent to become the first African American to represent Clarke County at the Capitol since Reconstruction.

Mike led Georgia’s Division of Family & Children Services where he earned a reputation as a “turnaround-expert” creating the Work First program that helped 90,000 Georgians move back into the workforce.

He then went on to serve as Georgia’s Labor Commissioner, where he transformed outdated unemployment offices into state-of-the-art career centers that facilitated the employment of over 300,000 Georgians.. As Commissioner, Mike turned the unemployment office into a career center: created the Georgia Work$ model, that has been copied by more than 30 states.

Derrick Jackson

Governor

Representative Jackson’s journey began in the disciplined and demanding environment of the U.S. Navy, where he cultivated the leadership skills and work ethic that would later define his career in both the corporate and public sectors. Following his military service, he transitioned into a successful tenure at General Electric, where he spent nearly seven years as Senior Marketing Manager. In this role, he was not just a manager but a catalyst for growth, identifying $1 billion in global market opportunities and forging critical international strategic partnerships. These accomplishments stand as a testament to his ability to think strategically and act decisively.

Representative Jackson’s career in public service is driven by what he describes as a “born-to-serve” philosophy. As the State Representative for Georgia’s 68th District, he is a vocal advocate for enhancing the quality of life for all Georgians. This commitment is evident in his legislative work, his role as an adjunct professor and lecturer, and his active involvement in numerous non-profit organizations. His dedication to community service has earned him widespread recognition, including prestigious honors such as Fayette County Citizen of the Year, Atlanta Business Journal’s 2019 Top 25 Extraordinary Atlantans, and received two Presidential Lifetime Achievement Awards, presented by Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Georgia State Representative Derrick Jackson is a leader whose life and nearly 42-year career exemplify service, dedication, and excellence.
